When it comes to camera specs, dynamic range seldom gets the credit it deserves in the still photography world. In the motion camera world, though, people seem to care about it more, which is what makes the new RED Raven camera with 16.5-stops of dynamic range so interesting.
Above is the first footage released with the new camera, which starts at only $6,000. Now, I use the phrase “only $6,000” in the context of other high-end video camera that shoot 4.5K footage.
The footage looks great so far with lots of detail, which is the overall point of having a lot of dynamic range in the first place.
For reference, DSLRs for still photography typically fall short of 16.5 stops of dynamic range by several full stops, so I’m a little jealous.
