Portable solid-state drives (SSDs) are fantastic tools for photographers, videographers, and content creators. They are incredibly compact, so you can keep one on you and keep your work backed up even if you are traveling. They offer fast enough speeds to work directly off of to keep your computer’s hard drive freed up. And most of them are very durable, keeping your files safer than hard disk drives (HDDs). The downside is that they are more expensive than HDDs, but luckily, prices frequently drop, and right now, you can get two versions of our favorite SSDs—SanDisk’s Extreme Portable SSD—for cheaper than we have ever seen them. Explore the sweet deals on SanDisk portable SSDs below.

SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD $119.99 (was $459.99)

SanDisk

SEE IT

For most creatives, 2TB of portable storage is an ideal amount. And it also happens to provide the biggest discount of all the capacities of this model. The Extreme Portable SSD offers up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds over a USB-C connection, IP55 water and dust resistance size feet of drop protection, and a carabiner loop to keep it from getting lost. And the rubberized texture keeps it from slipping out of pockets or off of airplane tray tables.

More capacities:

SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD $299.99 (was $899.99)

SanDisk

SEE IT

If the Extreme Portable doesn’t offer fast enough speeds for you, the Extreme PRO Portable SSD should fit the bill. It provides up to 2000MB/s read and write speeds, making them the better choice for videographers who may want to edit directly off the drive from time to time. It still offers the same ruggedness and durability as the other drive, so your precious files will be safe.

Solid state drives (SSDs) are essential pieces of any photographer or videographer’s kit. They can help keep your computer hard drive from filling up thanks to the fast speeds that allow you to edit directly from the drive. And they are extremely stable and reliable despite their tiny size, so you can keep them on you during your travels. It’s always good to have a few on-hand, and right now, Amazon has some of the best options heavily discounted.

SanDisk Professional 4TB G-Drive SSD $399.99 (was $679.99)

SanDisk

SEE IT

This SanDisk G-Drive offers serious protection for your files. It is IP67 rated for water and dust resistance and was tested to survive when submerged in 3.3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. It also offers 2,000-pound crush resistance and can survive a 9.8-foot drop. The SSD offers read speeds of up to 1050 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1000 MB/s. And should you somehow manage to damage the drive or have issues with your files, SanDisk provides a five-year limited warranty.

Four terabytes is an ideal amount of storage for those wanting to use it as a temporary backup or for videographers with large files, but the other capacities are also on sale as well. Some of them are running low on stock, though, so you may not want to wait if you are considering grabbing one.

Responsible photographers get to enjoy all kinds of benefits like the camaraderie of photo walks, the thrill of capturing a perfect shot, and the dopamine rush that comes with buying a new piece of gear. If you want to keep your work safe, however, you have to do a little bit of homework and that includes backing up your photos. March 31st marks World Backup Day. The day is meant to remind everyone to make sure all those photo and video files you have sitting around won’t be lost forever in the case of a failed hard drive or an errant venti latte spilled on your computer.

We know buying storage isn’t as exciting as unboxing a new camera or lens, but that’s what makes these World Backup Day sales so appealing. You can save cash on your important storage and leave room in the gear budget for that new mirrorless camera you’ve been eyeing or maybe a swanky new camera backpack to carry everything around in. Here are some of the best storage deals going around on World Backup Day 2023.

World Backup Day portable hard drive deals

SanDisk Extreme Portable 2TB USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C External SSD V2 $139.99 (was $472.99)

Abby Ferguson

SEE IT

For portable storage, the SanDisk Extreme Portable drives are some of the best around. THey offer an ideal balance of price, capacity, durability, and speed. The 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds are fast enough to work directly off of the drive, which is ideal when you are traveling. They offer 2.6-foot drop protection and an IP55 dust and water resistance rating, so you can trust your files are safe even if you aren’t gentle with the drive. Two terabytes is an ideal amount of storage for backing up working files before they go on a more permanent drive, but they also come in 500GB, one terabyte, or four terabyte options, and all are on sale right now.

LaCie Rugged SSD 1TB Solid State Drive $159.99 (was $279.99)

LaCie

SEE IT

LaCie’s Rugged drives are some of the toughest around. They are IP67 rated, protected from 9.8-foot drops, and offer two-ton crush resistance. These things can handle about anything. The bright orange color makes them easy to see, which is especially useful if you take them on hiking trips and drop them somewhere. And the rubberized texture prevents it from slipping out of your hand or off of an airplane tray table. The LaCie Rugged SSD is also available in 500GB, two terabytes, or four terabytes, should you want a different capacity, though the four-terabyte option is not on sale right now.

SanDisk Professional G-RAID Shuttle 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array w/160TB HDD $6,699.99 (was $8,499.99)

SanDisk

SEE IT

This storage is an investment, there’s no getting around it. It costs nearly as much as the 2000 Mazda Miata we bought recently. But, if you want serious amounts of in-house storage that is flexible in how you use it, you can’t beat SanDisk’s G-RAID Shuttle. It utilizes eight separate 20-terabyte drives and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60 configurations. It can also be daisy-chained to up to five devices. You can configure this in a way that makes sense for you and your files and because of the large size, you should be set for storage for quite some time.

WD 18TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive $299.99 (was $539.99)

Abby Ferguson

SEE IT

These Western Digital My Books are some of our favorite desktop drives. They are a fantastic option when you need lots of storage but don’t want anything fancy and don’t want to spend a fortune. They aren’t the fastest around, even compared to other HDDs, so you won’t want to work directly off of them. But, these large-capacity versions are an ideal choice for backing up your entire library at a much more affordable price than other drives. They come in a variety of capacities, but the biggest deal for World Backup day is the 18TB version.

World Backup Day memory card deals

Though we don’t recommend memory cards for keeping your files backed up, they are something you can never really have too many of as a photographer or videographer. And sales happen just frequently enough that it makes sense to hold off on stocking up until you can find discounts, which is the case during World Backup Day sales.

Lexar Professional 2000x 128GB SDXC UHS-II Card $95.99 (was $169.99)

Abby Ferguson

SEE IT

CFexpress is on the rise, but most cameras still use SD or SDXC cards. This Lexar Professional option promises read speeds of 300 MB/s and 260MB/s write speeds. It’s capable of handling 8K video, making it a good choice for videographers as well as photographers. And it’s temperature-proof, shockproof, vibration-proof, and X-ray-proof, so you can trust it will hold up no matter what you through at it (almost).

Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Reader $37.59 (was $69.99)

Lexar

SEE IT

Having a fast memory card is only one piece of the puzzle for fast performance. You’ll also need a fast card reader if you want to transfer files to your computer quickly. This Lexar CFexpress Type B card reader offers up to 1700MB/s of read speed, meaning you won’t have to wait nearly as long to get files from your shoot transferred and ready to edit. That’s even true if you are working with 8K video.

Photographers and video shooters put gear through the wringer. That’s why ultra-rugged devices like the new SanDisk Pro-G40 portable SSD are so appealing. It can hold up to 2TB of photos or footage and withstand the rigors of the field (or a serious coffee spill while working at your desk.)

SanDisk

SEE IT

You can’t kill it

The Pro-G40 SSD offers a 1TB capacity for $229 or a 2TB version for $429 (you can currently pre-order both directly from the Western Digital store). While those are fairly common capacities for a portable solid state drive, SanDisk’s rugged housing is a new breed. It offers an IP68 toughness rating, which indicates that it’s sealed to keep out dust and it can survive full submersion in up to 1.5 meters of liquid for 30 minutes.

The ruggedness goes beyond ingress protection, too. SanDisk promises the Pro-G40 can survive a fall from up to 9 meters and it’s crushproof under up to 4,000 pounds of pressure. So, you shouldn’t have to worry about the drive getting smashed, even if you somehow find a way to set a midsize SUV on top of it.

Transfer speeds

Despite its rugged nature, this pro-grade drive doesn’t skimp when it comes to speed. It relies on a single port to provide a Thunderbolt and USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection. Over USB, you’ll get 1,050 MB/s read speeds and 1,000 MB/s write speeds. If you’re plugged into a Thunderbolt port, however, speeds jump significantly. There, you’ll find 2,700 MB/s read speeds and 1,900 MB/s write speeds. That translates into enough bandwidth to move 50GB in well under a minute.

That kind of speed makes these drives particularly useful for editing photos and videos. With this much bandwidth (especially over Thunderbolt), you can keep your photos on the external SSD and keep your computer’s internal drive free and clear. I have been using one for several years now and I really recommend it.

With this drive, you’re paying a little more for the rugged nature of it, but these do tend to take a lot of abuse. Is all this wilderness-grade toughness overkill for editing at the coffee shop? Maybe. That is Until that Pumpkin Spice Latte becomes a festively scented, data-destroying catastrophe.

Memory cards are one of those essential items for photographers that it doesn’t hurt to stock up on, especially when they go on sale. Though quality memory cards are durable things, they still degrade and eventually fail. Like any piece of technology, they age and become less reliable. It’s always a good idea to get fresh cards to replace older ones to prevent a catastrophic situation where your entire shoot gets lost thanks to an old, worn-out card.

This Prime Day, three main memory card players are offering deals for you to take advantage of: Lexar, PNY, and SanDisk. All three companies are known for the durability and quality of their products and have different ranges of memory cards intended for diverse types of content and budget. The significance of these deals varies, but we’ve found some of the best ones to help you build up your stash of cards.

PNY 256GB EliteX-PRO90 Class 10 U3 V90 UHS-II SDXC Flash Memory Card $191.99 (was $239.99)

PNY

SEE IT

Many devices still rely on classic SDXC cards, so they are good to have on hand. UHS-II cards are faster than UHS-I, so if you work with video or want to take advantage of fast burst speeds on your camera, you will want something from this class. This PNY option has a large amount of storage with 300 MB/s of read speed and 280 MB/s of write speed, so your card can keep up with what your camera is capable of.

Lexar Professional 512GB CFexpress Type B Memory Card $399.99 (was $479.99)

Lexar

SEE IT

CFExpress cards are the new kid on the block for memory cards, and they are pricey as a result. However, with the high price, you get lightning-fast speeds and excellent durability. While 17% off isn’t the most significant sale, it will save you some money as you build out your memory card stash with this newer type. Plus, at 512GB, this card is massive, making it especially ideal for cameras that produce large files or video shooters.

Memory cards are one of those photography items you can never really have too many of (okay, within reason). They are a bit like lip balm; you want to have them stashed in every bag and nook and cranny, ready to be used in those unexpected moments.

While some memory card types like SD cards have become extremely affordable, newer options like CFexpress models can be costly—even for smaller storage capacity. So when a deal pops up, it’s generally a good idea to jump on it. Luckily, you can pick up some of the most reliable memory cards around right now for up to $110 off.

Best deal on CFexpress cards: SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO CFexpress Card Type B $139.99 (Was $249.99)

Sandisk

SEE IT

The CFExpress Card Type B is backwards-compatible with certain cameras that use XQD cards, so they’ll work with high-end, data-hungry models like the Canon R5 and Sony Alpha 1. They are one of the pricier memory cards out there, unfortunately, though the speed, stability, and durability you get with them are worth the cost. Luckily the 128GB Extreme PRO version is on sale for 44% off at Amazon.

Best deal on microSDXC: SanDisk 512GB Extreme microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card with Adapter $71.99 (Was $129.99)

Sandisk

SEE IT

If you are looking for a microSD for your action camera, this SanDisk 512GB option is a great choice. It is capable of 4K UHD and Full HD video recording at higher framerates, which is great for slow motion. The 512GB version is currently on sale for 45% off at Amazon.

If a bit slower microSD is good enough for you, perhaps for your phone or tablet, Sandisk has their 400GB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card with Adapter on sale as well. Head over to Amazon for 36% off.

Best deal on SDXC: Lexar Professional 2000x 128GB SDXC UHS-II Card $129.99 (Was $189.99)

Many camera models still utilize SD cards and they are well worth having on hand. Though the price has come down significantly over the past few years, high-speed versions can still be costly. Plus, a good deal is never a bad thing. This Lexar 128GB card is currently available on Amazon for 32% off.
SanDisk also has an SDXC on sale, though it is slower than the Lexar. The SanDisk 256GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card has a read speed of 170MB/s versus 300MB/s with the Lexar. However, the 256GB SanDisk is 50% off currently, so if your shooting style can handle slower card speeds then this option may be for you.

SanDisk Connect Wireless Stick

I don’t like deleting photos, even when they’re not great or I know they have already been double backed up. Because of this, I run out of storage on my phone rather often. SanDisk’s Connect Wireless Stick is designed to alleviate that problem.

The stick is available in four configurations ranging from 16 GB all the way up to 128 GB. it has built-in Wifi and can transfer images to and from up to three devices at once, including a laptop. The whole thing surrounds a revamped app made specifically to interact with the stick. If you’re trying to stream video, it can stream up to 4.5 hours before needing to be charged.

In addition to the wireless connection, there’s also a built-in USB connector, so it can be plugged directly into a computer for charging and for instant transfer of files. It also now has handy features like auto-backup of the camera roll straight to the drive so you can delete them off your phone and have more space for taking images.

The 16 GB model starts at just $29 and the 128 GB model costs $99. Look for a full review in the next couple weeks.

In case you didn’t hear back at CES or see Panasonic’s new GH4 camera, 4K video capture is coming and the prospect of all that data is making memory cards a little nervous. Sandisk’s new Extreme Pro SDHC/SDXC UHS-II cards, however, are built for the rigors of Ultra-High-Definition recording.

The card itself is a UHS-II Speed Class 3 and has a maximum transfer speed of 280MB/s. Of course you’ll likely never get that kind of speed in a real world situation, but that’s the most common way of comparing cards. If you’re shooting photos instead of video, the speed is capped at 250 MB/s.

Of course, the UHS-II classification means you’ll need a compatible camera, and right now, the first camera to support it is the powerful little Fujifilm X-T1.

httpswww.popphoto.comsitespopphoto.comfilesimportembeddedfilesimce_uploadssandisk_card_reader_1.jpg

The cards will be available in April. 16 GB will cost you $119, while the 64 GB cards will run you $299. There’s also a new card reader in the Extreme Pro SDHC SDXC UHS-II Card Reader, which will also be available in April for $50. It will help take advantage of that high read/write speed even when the card is out of the camera.

it really is pretty impressive how fast memory cards are adapting to accommodate all the data we keep throwing at them. Just the other day, I came across a 64 MB (not GB) card in my office. I stuck it in a Canon 5D Mark III and crashed the whole thing. I remember paying full price for that card, too. Funny how things progress.

Sandisk has a penchant for pushing out world’s firsts in terms of memory cards and their massive 200 GB microSD card is no exception.

The tiny little card costs $400 and was announced at the Mobile World Conference in Spain this week. While 200 GB doesn’t sound all that mind blowing when it comes to standard memory cards anymore, jamming all that into a microSD that’s smaller than your average corn flake is pretty impressive.

If you were to stick the card into a Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone, you could store roughly 45,000 photos before it got full. It’s also notable because now that GoPro cameras use MicroSD and shoot space-hungry 4K video, big capacities cards are a welcome development.

Frankly, I have to wonder if microSD will ever make its way into dedicated cameras. They’re getting smaller all the time and microSD is making strides in both speed and capacity. I’m still partial to the big, tough compact flash cards, but that’s just because I’m an old dinosaur and that’s what I started with.

Memory cards have come a long way in the past decade or so. I remember stocking up on 256 MB cards at Best Buy on Black Friday one year to feed into my DSLR. So much space! Now, however, SanDisk has announced a 512 GB Extreme Pro SDXC card that’s capable of keeping up with the new wave of 4K resolution video.

It has a stated max write speed up to 90 MB/s and an overall transfer rate of 95 MB/s, which is necessary if you want to record 4K to a card. Because it’s part of their Extreme Pro line, it’s also resistant to things like extreme temperatures, X-rays, impacts, and water.

The card will be available available soon for $800. And while $800 is a lot for a memory card, it may be what some shooters really need. And, with the rate at which memory cards progress, it will be interesting to see if they can keep up this pace. After all, it was just 2003 when SanDisk first announced their 512 MB cards. That’s a big jump.
