The death of the Rocky Mountain News is only the latest of the very bad news about the future prospects for newspaper photojournalism. The idea of a country without newspapers serving cities and towns is frightening, precisely because it’s beginning to seem like a possibility. Where will local journalism come from? One idea for keeping newspapers running is to turn them from for-profit businesses (or “no-profit” businesses, as Editor & Publisher puts it this article) into non-profit NGOs with large endowments This is precisely what has been happening to photojournalism over the past decade: With newspaper space drying up, with magazines selling celebrity style rather than news, photojournalists have been turning to NGOs for assignments and funding. Maybe turning news itself into a non-profit industry might be good for everyone.–David Schonauer
