News Punch Up The Light Hard lighting for hard subjects. | Published Jan 28, 2011 3:16 AM EST News Matthew Hanlon successfully sculpted the physique of this model/ boxer using predominately hard light, with just a touch of softer fill. His front lights were Calumet travelite 750r monolights (A), which he aimed directly at the subject, without diffusion. Similarly his rimlights, two Quantum Qflash t5d-r flashes (powered by Quantum turbo batteries, not shown) (B), reached the boxer unmodified by softboxes, umbellas, or other forms of diffusion. Hanlon suspended a black fabric backdrop from a Calumet heavy-duty background stand (C) and supported his lights with Calumet lightstands (D). He shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and 24–70mm f/2.8L lens (E). Behind the camera position, another Calumet travelite 750, with softbox (F), provided weak fill to open up the shadows. Hanlon fired each strobe with a PocketWizard Plus II. SHARE Canon 5D Mark II ($2500). Quantum T5d-R flash ($628). Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM ($1280).
