Century-Old Statue Destroyed By Selfie-Shooting Tourist
Ugh, this is a bummer
In some very important ways, social media has turned some types of photography into extreme sports rather than art forms. The final photographic product is almost inconsequential, providing little more than visual evidence of an escapade, usually a stupid one, that needs proving. That seems to be the case with a recent accident that resulted in a shattered statue.
You can get the full story at DIY Photography, but it’s an altogether too-familiar one. Someone likely wants social media cred, so they climb where they don’t belong in order to take a picture. Catastrophe happens.
I know most of you have better sense than to try anything so stupid, but we can take away a nice reminder about how severe tunnel vision can be when we’re on a mission to get a photo. Always be aware of your surroundings for the sake of others.
