Andreas Gursky Photo “Rhein II” Sells for $4.3 Million at Auction
A new piece of work gains the title of world's most expensive photograph

If you were impressed when a Cindy Sherman print sold for $3.9 million, then you’ll want to hold onto your monocle while checking out the new “world’s most expensive photograph.” The photo depicts a secluded section of the Rhine river and it was sold by Christie’s auction house for $4,338,500. It was only supposed to fetch somewhere between $2.5 million and $3.5 million.
The print itself is a chromogenic color print face-mounted to Plexiglass and measures 73 x 143-inches, making it quite big. It’s one of an edition of six and its siblings are currently on display on some of the biggest art museums in the world.
