The iPhone camera is one of the most popular cameras on the planet, so it only makes sense that a whole world of accessories also exist to augment it. The latest in a line of add-on lenses comes from Olloclip and adds 2x magnification to the lens as well as a circular polarizer filter.
Olloclip has been doing this kind of thing for a while now. The actual device is two-sided. One side uses a magnifier to give you more telephoto reach, while the other has a rotating circular polarizer to help combat reflections and darken skies.
It costs $100, and we’re interested to see how the polarizer works. Typically, wide angle lenses prove to be a bit of a challenge for circular polarizing filters, causing heavy vignetting or uneven skies. Of course, you can also use your sunglasses in a pinch.
I’m still not quite sure how I feel about auxiliary lenses like this overall. I’m a proponent of the iPhone camera because I think it’s good enough to create some really great work, but adding something like this changes the whole process of smartphone photography.
What do you think? Would you add something like this to your phone camera?
(Note, I haven’t seen any official press images of the accessory yet, so the image above is from the Engadget hands-on, which you can check out here)
