A Girl and Her Room

In these photos, teenage girls share their personal spaces in atmospheric portraits with accompanying quotes. With images taken around the world, from Palestinian refugee camps to privileged homes in American cities, the result is a graphic depiction of the ways these young women’s lives differ as well as the struggles they share—the angst, confusion and self-determination that so often coexist at the cusp of adulthood.

Robert Capa’s most productive years (and his whiskey-and-cigarettes lifestyle) are chronicled in this historically rich volume. Hundreds of pictures show Capa’s versatility, from gutsy wartime shots to fashion images for Photo Monde. The book debunks and clarifies many Capa myths and facts, including a moving account of Capa’s early collaboration with his companion, photographer Gerda Taro, who was killed covering the Spanish Civil War in 1937. Its final Capa image, of French soldiers walking through a rice paddy in Indochina in 1954, was made moments before the great photojournalist was killed by a land mine, still holding his Contax SLR.
