Watch This: Grace Rawson and the Fading Art of Hand-Coloring Black and White Photographs
A beautiful process kept alive by a true artist
Recently, there has been an uptick of interest in the idea of “colorizing” black and white photos. Some enthusiasts do it using Photoshop, while others are trying to use automated algorithms. But, back when color photography wasn’t the norm, there were artists doing it by hand.
This very well-shot short video tells the story of Grace Rawson who has been a part of the hand-coloring process since the 1950s. Rawson is now 83 years old and still capable of some truly beautiful hand-coloring work. She now lives in Auckland after having worked for the Iconic Whites Aviation more than half a century ago.
